How Is the Price of a Gold Piece Calculated? Weight, Karat and Craftsmanship

The question we hear most when people buy gold jewelry is "Why does this piece cost what it costs?" The answer rests on a simple formula:

Price = weight (grams) × gram price of the karat + craftsmanship + stones/extras

1. Weight and karat

The piece is weighed on a scale. The karat tells you how pure that weight of metal is; each karat has its own live gram price, which moves with the market.

2. Craftsmanship

Craftsmanship reflects how difficult the piece is to make, the handwork and the design. A plain wedding band and a finely woven bracelet of the same weight carry different labor charges. Jewelers often express this as an amount of gold per gram of the piece.

3. Stones and extras

Diamonds, zircons and other stones are added on top. The type, size and quality of the stone directly affect the price.

Worked example

These numbers are for illustration only: at a gram price of 6,000 TRY, a 10-gram piece has a gold value of 60,000 TRY. Add craftsmanship (say 0.10 gram of gold per gram = 1 gram = 6,000 TRY) and the piece comes to 66,000 TRY; stones, if any, are added to the total.

Why does the price change during the day?

The gram gold price moves during the day with the gold ounce price and the USD/TRY rate, so the same piece can cost something different today than tomorrow. The prices on our site are calculated automatically from the live rate; call us or message us on WhatsApp for an exact quote.
