A solitaire ring is a classic engagement ring in which a single main stone takes center stage. A diamond's value is set by four international criteria known as the 4Cs.
1. Carat — weight
Diamond weight is measured in carats; one carat is 0.2 grams. Price rises exponentially, not linearly, as stones get bigger — so even 0.90 ct and 1.00 ct can differ noticeably in price.
2. Color
Diamonds are graded from colorless to light yellow on a D–Z scale. D–F is colorless and G–J "near colorless"; the G–H range gives many buyers a good balance of look and price.
3. Clarity
Clarity describes tiny internal characteristics (inclusions) from FL (flawless) to I (included). Inclusions that cannot be seen by eye (for example VS or SI1) can offer a price advantage.
4. Cut
Cut determines how well the stone returns light and has the biggest effect on sparkle. A well-cut smaller stone can look brighter than a poorly cut larger one.
Certificate
For solitaires in particular, we recommend asking for a certificate documenting the 4C grades, issued by an international laboratory such as GIA.
The ring itself
The karat (14 or 18) and weight of the mounting affect the total price. The setting — number and shape of the prongs — matters for the security and look of the stone.
